Portfolio Post 10 (Week 4): Significance of Planning
Significance of Storyboarding
Though it might seem storyboarding could be chalked up to a tedious over-exertion of forethought, it is actually a crucial step in drafting our opening. This form of groundwork allowed us to create an illustrated version of the sequence or to put it more vaguely develop a keen understanding of out plot. Planning to this extent ensures that at a bare minimum our story will flow smoothly and this eradicates the possibility of forgetting to film a scene. Efficiency in filming will also follow as an advantage brought on by our storyboard because we will not need to make up scenes or add more substance on the fly; this creates a sense of preparedness that can serve as a backbone of confidence in our creation. Furthermore by sketching each shot we also subconsciously are establishing what types of shots will correlate with each scene. Though, of course, there is wiggle room once we begin actually shooting this will give us at least a sense of direction that we will utilize as convenient netting upon production.
We included not only shots but also post production information in our storyboard to prematurely get the gears churning. By including what types of transitions I imagine between shots the editing process will already be somewhat thought out. We also have begun to draft ideas of filters that can be added in Adobe. Finally, by adding notes referencing sound aspects we can diminish that from our brains while filming. There is no dialogue but rather a song that will play throughout the entire opening. We plan on having the music muffled at parts to convey to the audience that it is indeed a diegetic sound in case they missed the part where our main character turns on the music. None of this information will be inherently relevant to our filming process but it is reassuring to know that we already have plans for our post production.
